CD IELTS - Computer Delivered IELTS Test

The IELTS test is now available in both paper-based and computer-delivered formats. The computer-delivered IELTS, also known as CD-IELTS, is a newer format designed to provide a more convenient experience to students. With CD-IELTS, students can take the test on a computer and type their responses to the different sections, such as Listening, Reading, and Writing. Also, It is a convenient alternative to the paper-based test, and it may be a good option for students who are familiar with computers and have good typing speed. Also, It is required to familiarize yourself with the format and question types before taking the test to ensure you feel confident and prepared on test day.

CD-IELTS format

The CD IELTS has the same format as the paper-based IELTS exam. Four divisions are added to the CD-IELTS test: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

1. Listening: The Listening section of the CD IELTS test takes approximately 30 minutes and consists of four recorded audio passages with 40 questions. Students are provided with recorded audio and must answer questions based on the audio's spoken contents.

2. Reading: In the Reading part of the CD IELTS exam, you will get 60 minutes to solve three reading passages with 40 questions. Test-takers need to read the text and answer questions based on the data given in the content.

3. Writing: 60 Minutes are assigned to students to complete the writing section. Two tasks are involved in this section. In task 1, Students will get graphs, charts, or diagrams to write 150 words on it. On the other hand, task 2 depends on general topics like environment, family, crime, etc. Also, students need to write an Essay of 250 words.

4. Speaking: The Speaking section of the CD IELTS test is a face-to-face interview with a trained examiner, taking approximately 11-14 minutes to complete. Students need to take the speaking section in the same manner as the paper-based IELTS speaking part.

The CD IELTS test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to finish successfully, excluding the registration process and breaks. Likewise, a paper-based IELTS CD IELTS score is evaluated on a scale of 0-9, where 0 indicates the test taker did not attempt the test and 9 indicates an expert user. The overall score calculation depends on the average scores received in each section.

Here's a breakdown of the IELTS scoring Approach

Listening and Reading sections: Correct answers given by students decide their exact scores for these two modules. Students hold one mark for each correct response. Unlike other competitive exams, there are no negative marking criteria for wrong answers. At last, students will get scores between 0-9 bands depending on the total correct replies.

Writing and Speaking sections: The scores for the writing and speaking sections depend on the candidate's performance in various aspects, such as coherence and cohesion, lexical resources, grammatical accuracy, and pronunciation. The 0-9 band scale then comes into play to finally score the students on their average score obtained in all four sections.

Once the scores are estimated, the test taker obtains an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF), showing each section's overall and individual band scores. The TRF is valid for two years from the test date and is used for immigration, study, or work purposes.

In summary, the CD IELTS evaluates a test taker's English language proficiency through four sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Also, the students will get a score between the 0-9 band range based on their performance in each section.

How to practice CD IELTS?

There are several options for practicing the computer-based version of the IELTS test.

  • One option is to use the IELTS practice materials, which you can purchase from the official IELTS website. These materials include sample tests similar to the actual computer-based IELTS test.

  • Another option is using online resources such as IELTS practice tests on various websites, including our website, Western Overseas. These practice tests are designed to simulate the actual computer-based IELTS test and can help you become familiar with the format and types of questions you will encounter.

  • Consider taking an IELTS preparation course, either in-person or online, to help you prepare for the computer-based IELTS test. Many of these courses include practice tests and exercises specially designed for the computer-based test version.
