Learn All about the OET Exam

  • OET, abbreviation "Occupational English Test," is respected as the best English proficiency test apart from IELTS, PTE, and TOEFL.

  • It was first introduced in 1980 by Professor Tim McNamara and administered by the Australian National Office for Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR).

  • Since 2013, the test has been regulated by CBLA (Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment), a strong association between Cambridge English and Boxhill Institute.

  • It has been developed to serve educational services to healthcare professionals in significant countries, significantly boosting the healthcare sector.

  • Countries that accept OET as an English proficiency measure are Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the USA, Ireland, Dubai, Singapore, Namibia, and Ukraine. Many firms like hospitals, universities, and colleges accept OET as proof of the candidate's expertise to communicate efficiently in healthcare sectors.

  • To show English competence, medical students must apply for OET before entering their desired country. Students can apply for 12 professional medical courses (dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology, and veterinary science) to pursue their degree.

  • Nurses, doctors, dentists, and pharmacists can apply for the courses in non-native countries through OET.

  • Students get OET results within 16 working days and they are available online at the official website.

  • OET is conducted 14 times yearly at specific venues so students can book any slots.

  • Students can book the exam online at the official website "occupationalenglishtest.org/book-oet."

  • OET exam price is Rs. 31,917.

  • There is no overall grading system; students get marks for four sub-tests (reading, listening, writing, and speaking). It is wise for students to get the required score in all sub-tests in one sitting.

OET Test Modes

Aspirants can take the exam in three ways as per their needs and convenience after taking the OET coaching. Three modes are

1. Paper-based OET: This mode applies to students over 30 years of age, and the test is taken at a specified venue. It includes four modules of the exam: listening, reading, writing, and speaking.

2. Computer-based OET: This mode is taken on the computer at a specified venue, and the exam pattern is the same as paper-based OET. The test is evaluated by certified and experienced examiners who also check paper-based OET.

3. OET at home: OET at Home is for students to take the test at their homes. Home-based OET acquires the same layout, time limit, and difficulty level as a paper-based OET. A dedicated system with fine internet access is the primary requirement.

OET Exam Pattern/OET syllabus

The OET exam is evaluated on the four English language skills. Listening, reading, writing, and speaking are those skills students get marks for. Let's discuss all these modules in detail.

Section Time duration Number of texts Types of texts Questions type Expertise

3. Writing Part

  • The task is to write a letter, usually a letter of recommendation. Occasionally, for some occupations, a distinguishable style of the letter is needed, like a transfer or discharge letter or a formal letter to notify a patient of safety measures.

  • Candidates are also provided some insight related to their profession, which is optional in writing.

  • This task is profession-oriented. So, a nurse needs to write an LOR specific to nursing, a doctor needs to write an LOR particular to medicines, and a dentist must write an LOR specific to dentistry.

  • Time Limit: Aspirants are given 45 minutes to complete the task.

3. Speaking

  • The speaking module consists of two sections, and test takers must participate in two role-plays.

  • In each part, candidates play the role of professionals.

  • An interlocutor also takes part in the role plays. They play the role of a patient or a patient's family member. The interlocutor can also be the owner or the carer of a pet animal in the case of veterinary science.

  • This module starts with a warm-up session where candidates get familiar with an interlocutor. Once the candidate gets warmed up, the main session starts.

  • As there are two rounds, a role-play card with specific healthcare-related topics is provided in both rounds.

  • Students are given 2-3 minutes to prepare for speaking material on the given topic. Both rounds are recorded for evaluation purposes.

  • Time Limit: The duration of this task is around 15-20 minutes

OET Scoring Criteria

There is a grading system to score a student for each module. Students get marks between 0-500, and the grade is calculated accordingly.
