Important news for students looking to study in New Zealand? Whether you are a newly enrolled student or planning to apply, there's a significant update that could make your journey even more rewarding.

What's Changing from November 3, 2025?

Increased Work Hours for Students

Starting November 3, 2025, eligible international students can now work up to 25 hours per week during term time—up from the current 20 hours! That’s more income, more experience, and more flexibility while you study.

This change applies to:

  • Tertiary (college/university) students

  • Year 12 and 13 high school students

  • Study Abroad and Exchange students – yes, even for one semester!

Changing Your Course or Provider?

There’s another crucial update:

If you plan to change your course, institution, or provider, you’ll now need to apply for a new student visa.

You can no longer make these changes by simply requesting a variation of conditions. Plan your academic moves wisely!

Why These Changes?

These updates are part of New Zealand’s ‘Going for Growth’ strategy, aimed at:

  • Doubling international student enrolments by 2034
  • Boosting the international education sector to NZD 7.2 billion

New Zealand is investing in a stronger, more student-friendly future—making it one of the top destinations for quality education and career opportunities.

What This Means for You:

  • More job opportunities during your studies

  • Better financial support and real-world experience

  • A clearer path toward long-term career goals in New Zealand
