What is the Germany Opportunity Card?

The Germany Opportunity Card, also referred to as Chancekarte, is a new visa initiative aimed at attracting talented individuals from across the globe. Advantages of the Germany Opportunity Card

Applying for the Opportunity Card comes with several benefits for international scholars, including:

  • Streamlined Entry to Germany: The Opportunity Card simplifies and expedites the process of moving to Germany from your home country. Unlike traditional methods, you do not need a job offer at the time of application. Instead, you'll need to meet qualification criteria based on a points system, which includes work experience, language skills, and other factors. Additionally, you can work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) and take advantage of a 14-day job trial. This flexibility allows you to find a job that aligns with your qualifications and interests.
  • Path to Permanent Residency: The Opportunity Card is valid for one year, providing you with ample time to seek employment and explore various job opportunities. During this period, you can also engage in casual or part-time work. Once you secure a suitable full-time job, you can apply to extend your stay in Germany. The extension is handled through the Registration Office for Foreigners, and transitioning from part-time to full-time employment can increase your chances of obtaining a long-term residence permit.
  • Competitive Income: The Opportunity Card allows you to work part-time, with earnings starting from 1,000 Euros annually. For those who secure full-time positions, the potential income can significantly exceed this amount.
  • Guaranteed Work Permit: Previously, non-EU citizens required a job offer and a visa to work in Germany, which often involved approval from the Federal Employment Agency. With the Opportunity Card, you can enter Germany and look for a job even if you do not yet have a job offer.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Germany Opportunity Card, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifications: Hold a recognized qualification, such as a university degree or vocational training (minimum of 2 years).
  • Language Proficiency: Demonstrate knowledge of German at an intermediate B2 level or English at a B2 level or higher.
  • Financial Support: Provide proof of financial stability for your stay. This involves opening a blocked account with 12,324 Euros (covering a monthly living expense of 1,027 Euros) and having valid health insurance.
  • Points System: Accumulate at least 6 points based on various criteria including qualifications, age, language proficiency, and work experience.
